Strong words for a new watch right? But I am damn serious. When Fawaz Grosi launched, in the year 2000, his first watch, the ‘Numero Uno‘, for his brand ‘De Grisogono’, I was right away in love with the construction of the case and the way the design of the two timezone dial was done. The watch was an instant succes and still is. But this time Fawaz Grosi really outdid himself with this extra ordinary new mens watch the ‘New Retro‘!The case was, as Mr. Grosi explained, inspired by his vintage cigarette case from the fifties. A style where curved glass and round lines were often seen in architecture and car designs. The result of his design is amazing. The two identical curved sapphire crystals, (of the back and the front of the watch), that go beyond the edge of the case and are subtly connected by a thin gold band, give the watch case a look, that I have not seen yet. Very stylish and masculine and in particular so different from Fawaz Grozi’s other watches and other timepieces on the market. But the ‘New Retro‘ still has that typical distinctive De Grisogono signature. When looking from the side of the case, at the no 3 or no 9 location, the numbers on the dial, have a nice three dimensional look, due to the curved glass. The dimensions of this, really out of this world, time piece are 50mm x 40mm. Quite large, even for a men’s watch, but since the case is rounded on all sides and the fact that the watch sits horizontal on the wrist, it does not feel too large at all, even on my 18cm wrist. The big crown, usually positioned at 3, is relocated and is positioned at the 12 location, what gives the watch a very balanced look. I have to say that I really admire De Grisogono for the fact that they dare to stick their neck out and release a mens watch without a date window! The result is a stunning looking Art Deco styled dial, with just two hands, giving you the time et basta. The ‘New Retro‘ really is a prime example of ‘Less is More’.
There are four different versions available depending on what person you are. The black dial, gives the most serious impression and can be worn anytime with any outfit. But absolute stunning and in my eyes the watch of Baselworld is the ‘New Retro‘ in pink gold featuring an original and daring colour scheme in the form of subtly graded shades of light green, that in a way gives the idea, of a dial that has survived the passage of time. It might be a bit harder to combine, but it’s a smashing tasteful combination of colour and design, for those who like a bit more extra vagant style. The ‘NEW RETRO‘ numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 have the DG10-01 mechanical, self-winding movement, oscillating weight in gold with new blackened appearance adorned with elegant openwork scrolling pattern, function hours, minutes. A power reserve of 42 hours, frequency 28,800 vibrations/h, 4 HZ and a water-resistance 3 ATM. These cases are available in rose- or white gold and all versions are delivered with a black alligator leather strap, with large square scales and triple folding clasp in rose or white gold.
The ‘NEW RETRO‘ No 5, (first one on the left in the picture) shares the same technical specs but has a black PVD coated steel case and a black PVD coated steel folding buckle. De Gisogone timepieces are all about style and quite different in looks and feel from what you may used to. They have a style of their own and are hard to compare. I was told that the ‘New Retro‘ will arrive in the stores around September and I would say have a close look and see for yourself if the ‘New Retro‘ will do to you, what it did to me.
Prices are CHF 26,800 for the white and rose gold versions, and CHF 14,000 for the steel PVC-coated version.
